Dr. Hawman is originally from New Mexico and attended New Mexico State University for his undergrad and earned his Doctorate Degree from Ooook-lahoma! State University in 1991. Dr. Hawman holds many interests at the clinic including Small Animals, Avian and Exotic, Pocket Pets, Wildlife, and Canine Rehabilitation, just to name a few. In fact, Dr. Hawman first introduced Canine Rehabilitation featuring an underwater treadmill into our clinic in 2007(over 16 years ago!) When he’s not busy providing exceptional care to our furry, feathered, and scaly friends here at the clinic, he enjoys spending time with his lovely wife, Vicky, their 3 year old grandson, as well as their 2 dogs – Maisy, a hound whom they adopted from the Humane Society and Taya, their yellow lab. He also enjoys many outdoor activities including but not limited to camping, hiking, biking, rock crawling, fishing and getting together with the whole family on the boat.
Dr. Eckert comes to us from Michigan where he attended undergrad at Kalamazoo and completed his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Michigan State University in 1995. His patient care focus is on dogs and cats and he has a particular affection for Rottweiler’s, Bulldogs, and Pit bulls. He and his wife, Lisa, currently have 2 kids, 3 dogs, (two of which were rescued) 2 adopted cats from the humane society and 3 horses (one of which is also a rescue). In his free time, he enjoys all aspects of wood working, including building furniture, hiking, biking, camping and hanging with his kids when they are on break from college.
Dr. McCaw is a native of Colorado, and earned both her undergrad and Doctorate degree from Colorado State University (Go Rams!) Dr. McCaw does not remember a time when she did not want to be a Veterinarian and she fulfilled that dream in 1999. She loves working with dogs and cats and firmly believes the fluffier they are, the better! When she is not spending time with her two sons, 2 dogs, and 4 cats, she enjoys traveling and shopping and getting outside to bike, hike, and snowboard, to name a few. Fun fact, Dr. McCaw has an identical twin sister.
Erin is one of our skilled veterinary technicians and is a native of Colorado. When she is not busy assisting our patients in our Canine Rehabilitation Center, she enjoys spending time outdoors with her 2 dogs, Iggy Pup and Beaker.
Cheyenne grew up on a farm in the Durango area and knew from a very young age that taking care of animals was her purpose in life. She followed that passion and became a Credentialed Vet Tech who graduated from the Bel Rea Vet Tech School in 2020. When she is not at the clinic, living out her dream, she helps her mom take care of the farm, including their 3 dogs, 3 cats, 3 goats and 5 horses. She also enjoys playing the piano and writing books. She hopes to one day become a published author.
Tenai is one of our great technicians and is a native of Colorado. Tenai grew up in a ranching family in the Cortez area which is where her desire to get into vet med came from. She enjoys taking care of the many horses, cattle, goats, dogs, and cats that have come into her life. When she is not busy living the ranch life or taking care of patients at the clinic, she enjoys traveling, kayaking, rodeo, and photography.
Hannah is a Colorado native. She has always had a life long love of all 4 legged furry friends and is currently enrolled in the Penn Foster Vet Science Program to achieve her dream of becoming a credentialed veterinary technician. When she is not at the clinic taking care of patients, she enjoys spending time with her rescue dog Fisher, and trail running, backpacking, skiing, and camping.
Carol comes to us from the East Coast. She moved to the Durango area in 2008. Between her background in customer service and her love of animals, she found her perfect fit here on our team. When she is not assisting clients and their pets with her awesomeness, she enjoys spending time with her husband of 32 years and their 2 labs- 8 year old Kona and 3 year old Smitty.
Cherice also comes to us from Arizona. She moved here to attend Fort Lewis College where she obtained her degree in sociology. Her favorite sports teams are The New England Patriots and the San Francisco 49ers because in Cherice’s own words, why only have one favorite? When she is not busy being a Receptionist Extraordinaire, she enjoys getting outside as much as possible either camping, hiking or both, or spending time with her 2 kittys, Amos and Pico.
Amanda is also one of our stellar receptionists and was born and raised in Durango. She has 3 dogs, Jackson, Buster, and Easton, and 2 cats, Tippy and Tina. She loves spending time with her husband and their 2 sons, and enjoys as much time as she can reading, gardening, camping, and traveling. Fun fact, before coming to work at Durango Animal Hospital, Amanda lived a year in Cambodia helping to teach preschoolers English and also lived in Costa Rica for awhile helping with their sea turtle program.
Shawn is one of our amazing receptionists and is originally from Arizona. She moved to the area in 2021. Her favorite part of her job is seeing all of our patients receive the care they need and getting to know the clients. In her down time, she likes to craft and play video games. She has a 2 year old retriever mix named Happy and just recently adopted two rats- Quasi Modo and Beau.
Cassie is the Practice Manager and is originally from Arizona. She has 2 kids, 2 dogs, 2 cats, and numerous chickens. She enjoys fostering kittens, going on road trips, hiking, camping, reading, gardening and watching her kids play soccer (Go Rangers!).
